April 21, 2010 (Kearny, NJ) Voters approved the Kearny School Budget last night. The vote count was 1578 votes(58.51%) in favor and 1119 votes (41.49%) against.
Our KOTW poll results on "Are You in Favor of the Kearny School Board Budget?" were 57 votes (50.9%) No and 55 votes (49.1%) Yes. The poll was not an accurate reflection of the actual results but captured the sentiment that the budget was not the hot issue in the school board election.
As our Discussion Board reflected, the creation of a middle school, patronage by school board members, qualifications of candidates, alleged favoritism of one youth soccer organization over another and demeanor of school board members were the topics motivating voters to cast their vote for their preferred candidates. The vote count was extremely close and it is expected that the challengers will request at a minimum a recount and attend the opening of absentee ballots to inspect those votes as well.
