February 10, 2010 (West Orange, NJ) Kearny resident Carla Henriques gave birth to twins today at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston after being rescued by an Essex County Sheriff's Officer. Essex County Sheriff's Detective Joseph Stivalo was on snow patrol when he came across a Dodge Magnum stuck without traction in West Orange. The vehicle driven by Miguel Henriques, the husband of Carla Henriques, was not able to gain traction on the hilly portion of Northfield Avenue.
Carla Henriques and some family members were moved to Detective Stivalo's SUV and transported to St. Barnabas Medical Center because she was already in labor. Detective Stivalo stated that if necessary he would have delivered the babies calling upon his prior training.
The birth of Snow Twins is a great ending to a potentially tragic story. Detective Stivalo has earned his honorary uncle title. Dad I am sure is relieved and probably going shopping for a SUV so he can transport Mom and twins back home.
