Harrison Firefighters joined by firefighters from neighboring towns battled a three alarm fire early this morning at 1 and 3 Kingsland Avenue in Harrison NJ. The fire which started shortly before 5:30 a.m. this morning is under investigation by the Harrison Fire Department.

Harrison Fire Chief Thomas Dolaghan stated that the fire started in the upper floor of one of the four story apartment buildings.

There were no deaths or injuries caused by the fire. Eighteen families were displaced and temporarily housed at the Harrison Senior Citizen Center on Harrison Avenue. There was extensive damage done to both buildings before the fire was brought under control. The two adjacent apartment buildings appear to be total losses. Early on firefighters concentrated on saving adjacent buildings because the fire had already engulfed the upper rear floors of the buildings upon their arrival.

Both New Jersey and New York media covered the fire live. Neighborhood residents were awoken by a helicopter from WABC-TV news 7online which covered the fire.

A detailed article by Bill Tompkins describing the progression of the fire can be found on the Fire Fighting News website. Photographs of the fire scene are available here.

Fire fighters from Kearny, East Newark, North Arlington, Newark, Jersey City, Lyndhurst and North Hudson assisted Harrison's fire fighters.
