December 4, 2009 (Harrison, NJ) Elba Carrasco, a 54 year Harrison resident, was struck and killed early this morning as she crossed McCarter Highway (Route 21) at Bridge Street, in Newark (NJ). Carrasco was crossing McCarter Highway at approximately 6 a.m. this morning on her way to work when a tractor trailer's rear wheels hit and killed her. The tractor trailer was making a turn off of McCarter Highway onto Bridge Street.

Newark Police shut down the roadway this morning causing a massive traffic jam as investigators determined how the accident occurred. Newark Police requested information with respect to the incident and found the driver of the tractor trailer who they believe struck and killed Elba Carrasco. No charges have been issued to date. It appears that the incident was accidental.

Several years back another woman was struck and killed in a similar manner at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and First Street in Harrison.

In both cases the drivers of the tractor trailers were unaware that they had struck and killed the pedestrian.

Our condolences to family and friends of Elba Carrasco.
