November 12, 2009 (Kearny, NJ) The accused killer, Javier Roman Velez, 30, who was arrested by the Harrison Police Department has returned to Massachusetts to face murder charges. Velez is accused of fatally shooting his roommate, Juan Manuel Trejo Hernandez, 26, after a heated argument over a soccer game.

Worcester Massachusetts detectives picked up Velez from the Hudson County Correctional Facility in South Kearny yesterday and transported him to the Worcester Central District Court for his arraignment.

In an appearance in the Hudson County Central Judicial Processing Court, Velez had previously stated his intention to fight extradition back to Massachusetts. Although fighting extradition is usually futile, it does delay court proceedings.

According to newspaper reports, the consumption of alcohol was a factor in the shooting death of his roommate. On the night of the shooting, the Southbridge Massachusetts police department had picked up Velez on unrelated public intoxication charge but released him prior to a warrant being issued for his arrest.

Upon learning that Velez had relatives who lived in Harrison, Worcester detectives called detectives in Harrison. Officers of the Harrison Police Department staked out the relative's apartment on Harrison Avenue and arrested Velez without incident when he left the apartment.
