July 5, 2009 (Nanuet NY) A tanker truck making a delivery of chlorine for a swimming pool leaked and caused the evacuation of the public swimming pool and lake.

According to one news report: "The accident happened at 10 a.m. when a truck driver from Universal Chemical of South Kearny, N.J., was delivering sodium hypochlorite to the Normandy Village pool, a chemical compound popularly known as chlorine and used as a disinfectant in swimming pools.

"When the guy hooked up to the connection, he saw that it was leaking and shut it off as quickly as he could," said John Kryger, deputy fire coordinator for Rockland County. "Basically, it is an accident and a problem with the hose and connector."

Lake Nanuet Park, which is downstream on Nauraushaun Brook from where the accident happened, was evacuated around 2 p.m. and remained closed for the rest of the day due to the irritating nature of the fumes from the chemical."

Update (July 14, 2009) : Local authorities proposed to fine Universal Chemical $37,500 for the spill.  Jerry Kaplan, President of Universal Chemical, stated that the incident was unprecedented and that Universal Chemical intended to fight the imposition of a fine in court.
