October 30, 2012 (Kearny, NJ) Hurricane Sandy flooded the lower part of Harrison causing the emergency evacuation of the residents of the 100 block of Warren, Sussex and Bergen Streets including the Harrison Riverfront complex. Early on in the storm, electrical power to Harrison, East Newark and parts of adjoining Kearny was lost and has not been restored. Street lights and traffic lights are out throughout the effected areas. There are no temporary lights set up or generators with the exception of a generator for lighting at Town Hall. Only a few stores were open and those stores were using backup generators to provide electricity to their refrigerators and electronics. Update: Power is expected to be out for 5 days per information obtained from the Town of Harrison.

Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G)does not have an estimate on when electrical power will be restored. The Harrison, East Newark and Kearny Police Dispatches have been flooded with calls from residents regarding when power will be restored. Harrison Mayor McDonough has been using robo-calling emergency system to advise residents in English, Spanish and Portuguese that they should not call the Harrison Police Department regarding the power outage as the Police have no information regarding power resumption.
