Community News

September 10,2011 (Kearny, NJ). As our community, the nation and the world remember the tenth anniversary of 9/11, KOTW takes a moment to reflect on the events of September 11, 2001. The beauty of September 11, 2001's beautiful blue skies and pleasant fall weather was transformed into a emotion filled day when two planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Even now it seems surreal that the events of 9/11 actually happened. Each person who experienced the event know where they were when they heard the news. The lives of several of our local residents lost their lives in the World Trade Center attack.

August 16, 2011 (Harrison, NJ). A resident of Hamilton Street in Harrison fatally stabbed his parents and his 3 year old niece before turning himself to police this morning. Harrison Police are withholding the names of the victims and the assailant until family members are notified. The house where the stabbings occurred is two blocks from the Harrison Police Station where the assailant turned himself in wearing clothes that were described as blood stained.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office and the Hudson County Crimes Unit have been at the scene of the crime. There are a number of television satellite trucks along Hamilton Street and Hamilton Street between North 2nd and North 3rd Street has been blocked off.

The last homicide in the Town of Harrison was in 2008.

May 30, 2011.  The Memorial Day weekend is a time to reflect and honor our soldiers present and past.  On November 19, 2005, one of Kearny's residents serving in Iraq lost his life as a result of a road side bomb in Baiji, Iraq.  Army Staff Sgt. Edward Karolasz gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country.  On this Memorial Day weekend, we stop to reflect and give thanks for all that Army Staff Sgt. Edward Karolasz and others have done on behalf of our country.  Our thoughts also go out to the the Karolasz family and friends.

The Newark Star Ledger has put together a Tribute to New Jersey Fallen Servicemembers Take a moment to visit the Tribute and take notice of the sacrifice made by these soldiers and their families on this Memorial Day.
